Helical Fusion and Tohoku University Launch Joint Research on Communication for the Social Implementation of Fusion Energy

Helical Fusion Co., Ltd. has launched a joint research initiative with the Takahashi & Karikawa Laboratory at the Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, beginning in August 2026. The research will explore new approaches to communication and dialogue for the social implementation of fusion energy.

The Takahashi & Karikawa Laboratory studies the safety of large-scale, complex socio-technical systems, with expertise in the social acceptance of advanced technologies, human-centered safety approaches including Safety-II, and human-machine collaboration.

The joint research brings together two perspectives: learning from how society has historically accepted — or resisted — emerging technologies, and looking ahead to the future society we want to create and working backward to consider the dialogue needed today.

Throughout history, new sources of energy have transformed not only industries and economies, but also how people live and how societies are organized. Fusion energy has the potential to bring change on a similar scale. Its implementation therefore requires more than technological progress alone.

The aim of this research is not to find ways to persuade society to “accept” fusion. Rather, it is to develop a methodology for ongoing dialogue with diverse stakeholders about a more fundamental question:

What kind of future do we want to build with fusion energy?

Through this collaboration, Helical Fusion and Tohoku University will explore how that dialogue can begin while the future of fusion is still being shaped.
